Hotpads Pattern: Easy Kitchen Crochet Project

A practical crochet hotpad pattern designed to protect surfaces from heat while adding a modern handmade touch to your kitchen. Made with super bulky cotton yarn for durability and structure

If your family is anything like mine, you’ll know that the kitchen – no matter how big – is the centre of family life. From doing homework, playing games, chatting with friends, enjoying a glass of wine after work to – shock – actual cooking, our kitchens are the heart of the house. Kitchens are also the perfect places to show off all your crocheted creations, so it’s only right that I share this free pattern with you for these chunky hotpads. Worked in the round using soft cotton ribbon yarn, they’re thick, practical and fun to crochet. Tried and tested in my own cocina, these hotpads are great for resting hot pots and plates on, or you can use them as on-the-go placemats. No matter if you switch up the palette so that they fit your interior or make a stack for friends (they make fantastic housewarming gifts), you’d love this quick project. They’re the kind of project you’ll actually use every day, plus, the hanging cord is so cute.

Designer Tips

Each round increases evenly to form a flat circle. The increase stitches are spaced further apart as you go, which creates that smooth, even shape.

Slip stitch into the top of your starting stitch at the end of each round. If you find this tricky, use a stitch marker to keep track.

This pattern uses a smaller hook than usual to create a thick, sturdy fabric. If your work starts to curl, try going up a hook size.

Feel free to play around with colour placement. You can swap your main and contrast shades or even try an ombré effect for something a little different.

Hanging Loop

At the end of the final round, move the yarn to the back of your work and switch to a 4.50 mm hook.

Chain 15 and slip stitch back into the first stitch of the round.

Adjust the chain length if you prefer a longer loop.

Fasten off and weave in your ends securely.

Finishing

Weave in all ends neatly. Blocking is optional but can help even out the shape.

Notes

You can easily turn these into placemats by skipping the hanging loop.

Try different colour combinations to suit your space. Neutrals give a clean, minimal look, while brighter shades add a more playful feel.
