If you spend any time hanging out with me here at Emmaknitty, you will already know that I am slightly obsessed with proper yarn organisation. There is genuinely nothing quite like sorting out a messy pile of yarn or transforming a messy hank into a neat, pristine cake ready for a brand new project.
If you have ever spent an entire evening winding hank after hank by hand, or using a clunky hand-crank caker, you will know the exact kind of tired I am talking about. Your wrist aches, your arm feels like it is about to pack in, and you still have half a stash left to get through before you can even cast on. I happen to suffer from mild hyperflexibility, so cranking cakes by hand on a manual wider can be quite painful for me after a while, so I had been thinking about purchasing an electric winder for a bit, which brings me to my new love affair with the Caydo A1 Pro Max: The Ultimate Electric Winder!
No need though, because – by coincidence! – the wonderful team at Caydo sent me the Caydo A1 Pro Max as a gift to test out in my studio. I have spent the last few days properly putting it through its paces, winding everything from delicate lace weight wool up to chunky yarns and massive leftover scrap piles. Today, I am sharing my completely honest thoughts on whether this machine lives up to the hype and if it deserves a spot in your craft room. Spoiler… It does!
I have used manual yarn cake winders before (and still own one), and recently wrote about how to make the perfect yarn cake, but this is truly a game changing experience!
Also, here’s a huge selling point: this electric yarn winder is a wonderful option for crafters managing joint pain or mobility limitations who find traditional hand-cranked models difficult or uncomfortable to use. It opens up a smoother, pain-free way to prepare your yarn stash so you can focus entirely on your next project.
Let’s have a look at why this winder is a great investment piece for your craft area.
Caydo A1 Pro Max Review: The Ultimate Electric Winder – Contents
What Is the Caydo A1 Pro Max?
In short, the Caydo A1 Pro Max is a heavy duty, electric yarn cake winder. It is designed to take all the heavy lifting and manual labour right out of prepping your yarn. While traditional hand operated winders have served us well for years, they can be a bit of a slog when you are dealing with large yarn quantities or a whole studio refresh. This machine runs on motor power, promising speed, precision, and a seriously impressive capacity. Let’s investigate…

The Pros: Why I Am In Love
After using this beauty across multiple projects, here are the standout features that completely won me over:
- A Massive 16oz Capacity: This is easily one of the best selling points. Most standard yarn winders max out at around 3 or 4 ounces, meaning you constantly have to stop, tie off, and start a fresh cake. The A1 Pro Max can handle a staggering 16 ounces of yarn in one go. You can wind massive sweater/blanket quantities without batting an eyelid.
- Exceptional Build Quality: Right out of the box, you can tell this is a well made piece of kit. It feels robust, sturdy, and built to last through years of intense crafting sessions.
- Surprisingly Whisper Quiet: I expected an electric motor to sound like a small aeroplane taking off in my studio, but this is genuinely whisper quiet. You can easily sit and run it while listening to a podcast or watching your favourite television show without needing to crank the volume up.
- Immaculate Centre-Pull Cakes: Beyond just speed, the cakes this machine produces are absolute perfection. They are neat, firm, and hold their shape brilliantly without collapsing. Crucially, the centre pull thread slides out smoothly from the very first stitch to the last, meaning no more frustrating yarn barf or tangles halfway through a project.
- Variable Speed Settings: Different yarns need different handling. The machine features adjustable speeds, letting you slow things down for delicate or sticky fibres, or whizz right up when you are in a rush.
- Dead Simple Setup: You do not need a degree in engineering to put this together. The setup is brilliantly fast and intuitive, meaning you can go straight from unboxing to winding your first cake in a couple of minutes.
- Gorgeous Aesthetics: Let us be honest, craft tools live on our desks and shelves where we can see them every day. This machine actually looks sleek and modern, fitting right into a stylish studio space without looking clunky or industrial. Its white and grey colours look really sophisticated and clean.
- Blazing Fast Efficiency: You can whizz through mountains of yarn in a remarkably short time. It saves so much physical effort, freeing up your energy for the fun part, which is the actual knitting and crocheting.
Mobility issues and joint pain? No problem!
This electric yarn winder is a wonderful option for makers managing joint pain, arthritis, or mobility limitations who find traditional hand-cranked models uncomfortable or inaccessible. Because manual winders require repetitive wrist rotation while simultaneously guiding tension by hand, they can quickly trigger discomfort. The Caydo electric setup replaces that physical strain with a simple ergonomic speed knob and steady, hands-free motor operation. It opens up a completely pain-free way to prep your yarn stash, ensuring that physical limitations never get in the way of enjoying your next project.

The Cons: What to Consider Before You Invest
I always want to keep things completely transparent with you. While the A1 Pro Max is an absolute dream to use, it might not be the right fit for every single crafter out there:
- The Price Tag: Let us address the elephant in the room. This is a proper investment piece, and the price may be a little out of reach for some crafters, especially if you are working with a strict hobby budget.
- Not Ideal for Casual Users: If you only cake up your yarn every so often, this machine might not be the best investment for you. It is a premium, heavy duty tool designed primarily for people like me who regularly cake up scraps, large yarn hauls, and continuous design projects. If you only wind one single skein a month, a standard manual winder will probably suit your needs just fine.

Final Verdict: Is It Worth Your Money?
If you are a serious knitter, crocheter, or indie dyer who is constantly dealing with hanks, cones, and large quantities of yarn, the Caydo A1 Pro Max is a powerhouse investment that will genuinely save your wrists and your precious crafting time. It turns an absolute chore into a joyful experience. However, if you only wind yarn on rare occasions, you might want to stick to a more budget friendly manual alternative.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can the Caydo A1 Pro Max handle delicate yarns like lace weight? Yes, absolutely. Because you can adjust the speed settings, you can slow the motor right down to handle delicate silk, mohair, or lace weight yarn without snapping the strand or stretching the fibre.
- Does it wobble or move around while winding? Not at all. It has a wonderfully sturdy base and secure clamping mechanism, meaning it stays firmly planted on your studio table even when you are zooming through a heavy 16oz cake.
- Is it difficult to store when not in use? While it is a heavy duty machine, its sleek design means it does not take up an excessive amount of space. If you have a dedicated craft corner or shelving unit, it fits right in without looking like industrial equipment.

September 20, 2026 at 4:50 pmThank you for your honest review. I have already purchased it and waiting for it to be delivered. While waiting for it I have been checking out other reviews and videos and none of them mention or show it being used with a table top yarn swift. Have you used it in conjunction with one and if so how well did it work?

I haven’t actually tried using this particular winder with a tabletop swift yet, but it should work in much the same way as a standard umbrella swift.
I hope you enjoy using it 🩷
