As you may know, as I’ve ranted on about it many, many times, I really love a good hot water bottle. They’re brilliant for people who suffer from chronic pain, or just when you want to feel snug and cozy in front of a TV series!
If you love Fair Isle but you’re a beginner knitter and don’t know where to start, the Hunter Hot Water Bottle Cover is a really be a great place to start off from. Not only does it look far more intricate than it actually is, but the Fair Isle pattern is written in a simple repeat that works up so quickly that you won’t believe you actually managed to make it in such a short time.
It’s a really satisfying, gratifying project. It’s so approachable and so soft, and the softness and overall usefulness of this project will mean that it’s something you’ll want to use again and again at home. We all love a useful project, and this is one of the most useful projects you can whip up, and the whole family will want you to make one for them, trust me!
I chose some luxurious wool and silk for this pattern and I highly recommend using natural fibres for this. You could even try cotton if you like, but I truly recommend 100% wool and avoiding acrylic, unless you fancy getting clammy!

Instructions
Yarn Notes
Yarns are held double throughout.
- C1: Friends Wool in 01
- C2: Friends Wool in 116
- C3: Friends Kid Silk in 01
Important: Colour 3 (C3) is held double throughout the entire project. Only Colours 1 (C1) and 2 (C2) are changed as instructed.
Neck Opening (Ribbing)
- CO: 39 sts using 4.0 mm needles with C1 and C3 held together.
- Join: Join to work in the round by slipping the first stitch over the last to close the gap, being careful not to twist. Place BOR marker. (38 sts total).
- Work: K1, P1 rib for 12.5 cm, measured from the cast-on edge.
Body Increases
- Increase Setup Round: K19, PM, K19. (38 sts).
- Transition: Change to 5.0 mm needles.
- Increase Round: K1, kfb, knit to 2 sts before next marker, kfb, K1, slip marker; repeat from * to * once more. (+4 sts).
- Next Round: Knit all sts.
- Repeat: Repeat the last 2 rounds (Increase Round and Next Round) 9 more times for a total of 10 increase rounds. (74 sts).
- Knit: Knit 5 rounds plain.
Colourwork and Finishing
- Follow Chart One.
- Knit 2 rounds plain.
- Follow Chart Two.
- Holding C2 and C3 together, knit 30 rounds.
- Bind Off: Break yarn and fasten off. Turn your work inside out and, using a crochet hook, slip stitch the open bind-off edge together, or use a yarn needle and mattress stitch to sew it closed.
- Finishing: Turn your work right side out. Weave in all ends carefully. Blocking is recommended for a professional finish.
To insert the hot water bottle, fold it in half vertically, insert through the neck opening and reshape. Enjoy your new hot water bottle cover and get cozy!
