Could this be my first ever sewing tutorial? Oh, yes! I’m definitely not a sewist (nor do I pretend to be!) but I do love a simple sewing project when I lose my knitting and crochet mojo. So, a few months ago I sorted out my PJs drawer and came across some pajama bottoms that I hadn’t worn in ages and thought that there had to be something I could to do re-purpose them… So, after putting my thinking cap on and dreaming of colder seasons I decided to turn them into these adorable pumpkin pincushions.

I am so thrilled with how they turned out! The process is so simple and as I know you all love a cheeky DIY project that also uses up and recycles scraps and old clothes, I think you’re going to fall in love with them, too! If you don’t have old PJ trousers you can go ahead and use sleeves from a sweater or hoodie, leggings or anything else you like. See the ‘notes’ section for more info on this. I really adore the wooden bead detailing and will definitely make some more using glass beads in future.

As well as making fantastic pincushions they also make gorgeous decorative pumpkins that are ideal for gifting. Also, like all quick and easy sewing projects, you probably won’t be able to stop making them!

What you’ll need: A pair of pajama bottoms (ideally in a stretchy material) or even the top of some old socks, sweaters, leggings or hoodies – just make sure they’re in good condition and not worn out, a sharp sewing needle, sewing thread/floss, fiberfill or old yarn for stuffing, sharp scissors (fabric scissors are the best), wooden beads or anything else you can think of to create the stem, glittery lamé yarn or thread to attach the beads on top.

Difficulty:

How long will I need to make these? 10-15 minutes.

Notes: Steer away from materials that are floppy and could fray (like silk or 100% cotton) for these pumpkins. If you don’t have old pajama trousers you can also use the sleeves of a sweater or sweatshirt with great success.
Don’t worry if you’re not the best or neatest sewer. All your stitches will eventually be hidden in your work.
These are not intended for use as toys and are purely decorative items.

Method:

Carefully cut the pajama bottoms into sections of around 4-5 inches high and turn them inside out as shown. You can get a lot of sections from regular-length sleeves or trouser legs. If you like you can cut longer sections which will make the pumpkins taller. Now take your needle and thread and you’re ready to go!

Now you’re finished and can make as many as you like! Feel free to create a crocheted or knitted stalk to attach to the top of your pumpkin, use a cinnamon stick, a ‘real’ stick or anything else you fancy. You can let your imagination run wild with these pumpkins and truly play around with textures, embellishments and even embroidery.

If you make any of these please tag me on Instagram – I’d love to see your creations, as always!

Enjoy your Sleepy Time Pumpkins and have a creative day,
