Sage Soap Saver · Free Crochet Pattern

This pattern is available for free, but you can make a small donation via my Ko-Fi account if you’d like to say thanks. Every donation helps me out, supports a one-woman-owned small businss and allows me to carry on creating free content for you. Thank you!

I don’t know what the weather’s like where you are, but here in the north of Spain it’s been positively scorching! The idea of knitting or crocheting anything with wool or acrylic right now makes me itch – literally, and a sweaty itch at that. So, I decided to whip up something small, cute, satisfying, and useful without making myself even sweatier in the process. Bonus!

These aren’t my usual colours, and to be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of green (a bit like my homegirl Michelle Visage), but this olive shade happens to match my bathroom perfectly, so I went for it! It’s a purely selfish crochet project, but I thought I’d share it here in case you fancy a quick, summery make while you’re on holiday or just keeping cool at home. Or trying to.

This lovely little make is the PERFECT little gift and you can make, like, 50 in an afternoon and give them to everyone you love! They’re so easy to match to your home’s aesthetic and good for using up those annoying scraps of cotton, plus the texture of those cool hdc/dc between the posts stitches give you a lot of scrubbiness.

This project uses less than one ball of gorgeous Katia United Cotton in this elegant Khaki shade (honestly, less than 25g of yarn! What a dream!) but feel free to substitute it with any DK-weight cotton yarn you like. I recommend using a sturdy cotton for durability, but any plant-based yarn will do nicely.

You’ll need:
15-20g of DK (light worsted) cotton yarn
3 mm crochet hook
Scissors
Yarn needle for weaving in ends
A regular sized bar of soap

Techniques:

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet

Round 1:
Ch 28, and sl st into the first ch to form a ring.
Ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout, unless you prefer not to. You can also work without foundation chains if you feel comfortable doing so).
Work 1 hdc into each ch around.
Sl st into the top of the beginning ch‑2 to join.

Round 2 – 8:
Ch 2, then work 1 dc into every st around, inserting your hook between the hdc/dc stitches of the previous round (instead of into the top loops).
Sl st into the top of the beginning ch‑2 to join.

Round 9:
Ch 2, then work 1 hdc into every st around, again inserting your hook between the posts (i.e., between the dc stitches of the previous round).
Sl st into the top of the beginning ch‑2 to join.

Finishing:
Break yarn and weave in the ends securely.
At the bottom (seamed section), insert your hook as shown in the images and sc across to create an extra seam for added strength.

Drawstring:
Ch 80, then pull the yarn firmly at the end to tighten and secure the last chain stitch.
Weave the drawstring in and out around the top of the pouch, at the base of your first hdc round.

…And that’s it! Such a sweet and simple pattern. If you loved it, please comment and share with your friends. I love hearing from you… 😘
